Is Spirit okay to fly?
I say YES because of their cheap nonstop flights that works for me.
I don't have a clue why they are so cheap, but their website will tell you how it works.

Most people are catching on, Spirit airlines are the only airline that you may go to the ticket counter to buy you tickets to get their low fares that you may see online for the fare clubs. They call it the "penny fare".
Basically you pay for the fare plus other associated fees.
Here is and example of my last flight I took. I traveled from Dallas to Chicago for only $47.62 roundtrip.

So when I went to the ticket counter to purchase the fare...below is my actual ticket.
Another example is a flight I brought mother:
The fare was $9 and the travel fees were $14.30 which made it a one way ticket from Dallas-Fort Worth Airport to O'Hare International Airport in Chicago for an amazing $23.30. That's cheaper that filling you gas tank. So that is another reason I recommend flying on a budget. You can see you family, friends or handle some business for a inexpensive price.

Can I take a backpack on Spirit for free?
Yes that is called your "personal item"
There is a huge difference between personal item and carry-on.
Let me explain:
A personal item can be a purse, small backpack or duffel bag.

In my experience while traveling, my bag has been that size above and also I may have a plastic bag in my had with my snacks, tablet, phone and ear buds while boarding the aircraft with no issues.
The thing is if you are going for a couple days you should need that much with you.
Spirit airline will send you an email 24 hours to check in.
Seats
You can choose random seat for free and before you before you can ask the gate agent if you can volunteer for the exit Row for more leg room if you are willing to assist in case of an emergency to change your seat and it will be for free.
Also when the flight reach cruising altitudes if there any empty seats you may move around the cabinet (change your seats) for free without worry about paying for a seat.
It is best to check in so when you won't get an issues because there can be. Below is a video of how you cam checkin at the many kiosks in the airports.
Meanwhile, some may receive this boarding pass below to see an agent.
However, it is best to use many kiosks to reprint your ticket because there are glitches in the system. If you don't succeed that really means go see the agent deposited the line because the may have an error on the system. For instance, the system marked me as a minor, but obviously I'm a grown woman. So expect the unexpected with any airline. That is why they say arrive at the airport two hours before your flight for domestic and 3 hours for international. I highly recommend a time schedule when traveling because life do happen. There can be travel, long security lines, or even misplacing your identification. It happens! It's best to be prepared.
